Presiden Jokowi Inaugurated Construction Kick-off of 2 x 1,000 MW PLTU Batang in Central Java And Electrification Program for 50 Locations in Outer Islands and Border Areas

(Batang, August 28th, 2015) President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, inaugurated Construction Kick-off of a steam power plant in Batang, Central Java with a capacity of 2x1000MW and Electrification Program for 50 Locations in Outer Islands and Border Area in Batang, Central Java, Friday August 28th, 2015.

In the inauguration, the President was accompanied by the Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs, Darmin Nasution; Minister of State Owned Enterprises, Rini Soemarno; Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Sudirman Said; Minister of Finance, Bambang P.S. Brodjonegoro; Minister of Agriculture and Spatial Planning/Head of National Land Agency, Ferry Mursyidan Baldan; Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo; President Director of PLN, Sofyan Basir; President Director of PT Bhimasena Power Indonesia, Mohammad Effendi as the entity in charge for the development of this power plant.

The Central Java power plant, also known as Batang power plant (PLTU Batang), is a project built using the Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme. The Central Java project is the first large scale PPP project with investment of more than US$4 billion. It is also the first PPP project implemented based on Presidential Decree No. 67 of 2005 regarding Cooperation of Government and Business Entities in the Provision of Infrastructure.

Inauguration of this project by the President is a representation of the government support towards development for public interest and other infrastructures development.

Considering that PLTU Batang is the first PPP project with sizable investment, therefore the inauguration of construction kick off of PLTU Batang in Central Java will send positive signal to investors in PPP projects.

This also shows strong commitment from the Government to support investment and is expected to encourage investment in Indonesia.

President Director of PT Bhimasena Power Indonesia, Mohammad Effendi explained that PLTU Batang project is a steam power plant which will use the latest Ultra Super Critical (USC) technology and is currently the largest in Southeast Asia. This technology offers increased efficiency and has a lower environmental impact compared with the previous steam power plant technology.

In this occasion, PLN’s President Director, Sofyan Basir, assured that the project, which is also the first PPP project guaranteed by the Indonesia Infrastructure Guarantee Fund (IIGF), will provide employment opportunities for Indonesian and will support the nation’s economic improvement given its large capacity and high efficiency.

Electrification Program for 50 locations in Outer Islands and Border Areas

As an effort to meet the electricity demand in Indonesia’s outer islands and border areas with neighboring countries, the Government, through PLN, has implemented a program to build diesel power plant.

A total of 149 units of diesel engines [gensets] built in 50 locations across 13 provinces, including Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, West Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku, and Papua.

With a total capacity of 67.8MW, PLN will be able to provide electricity for as many as 35,468 new customers located in outer islands and border areas.

PLN’s President Director, Sofyan Basir, is very grateful that the electricity program finally reaches the citizen of Indonesia’s outer islands and border areas so that they can enjoy the electricity they have coveted for years.
